Cranberry Cased Hobnail Derby Silver Co. Pickles Castor
For those who have been searching for that perfect pickle castor....this is it! This gorgeous pickle castor is by the Derby Silver Co., Derby, CT, quadruple plate, #104. The date of the mark is 1900 to 1904 (see picture). The cathedral style quadruple plate frame is in excellent condition, with a pattern of roses surrounding the base, which is supported by four small feet. The lid fits the insert perfectly, and the insert fits the base perfectly also. There is one very small pinhead sized tarnish spot on the lid. The silver plate tongs are original to the castor and have a central flower on each side with bird claw tips. The cranberry cased hobnail pattern insert is in excellent condition, with only one small factory mold mark in the glass ( see picture). You can not feel it from either side. The hobnails are clear, and the center of the glass is cranberry (see picture). It is very thick glass, with a ground pontil, quality glass! The dimensions of the frame are 12 1/8" tall, and 5 1/4" wide. The insert is 3 3/4" in diameter, 3" in diameter where it sits in the frame, and 4 1/4" tall. You'll have to search diligently to find a nicer pickle castor....this is an excellent collector's piece!
